Now, the regulatory framework surrounding those systems is entering a new stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On 2 August 2026<\/strong>, a significant part of <strong>the European Union\u2019s AI Act <\/strong>becomes applicable. Just days before that deadline, the European Commission published its final guidance to help providers and deployers understand the transparency requirements established under <strong>Article 50<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For companies, this is not simply a legal update. It changes how AI systems should be designed, communicated, monitored and secured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transparency is becoming a product requirement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most visible changes concerns how users are informed when they interact with artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain <strong>AI systems <\/strong>will need to clearly disclose that a person is interacting with AI, unless this is already obvious from the context. The rules also cover the identification of specific AI-generated or manipulated content, including deepfakes and certain publications on matters of public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means transparency cannot remain hidden inside privacy policies or terms and conditions. It may need to become part of the <strong>user interface, content workflow and technical architecture of the product<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, companies may need to review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chatbots and virtual assistants.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI-generated images, audio and video.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Automated content-production tools.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Synthetic voices and digital avatars.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Applications built on third-party generative AI models.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is no longer only whether a system uses AI, but whether users understand when and how AI is influencing their experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Governance matters as much as compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI Act follows a phased implementation timeline. Obligations related to AI literacy have already applied since February 2025, requiring providers and professional users of AI systems to ensure that relevant employees have an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every requirement becomes applicable on the same date. Some rules for high-risk AI systems follow later timelines, with the European Commission identifying <strong>2 December 2027<\/strong> and <strong>2 August 2028<\/strong> as the latest application dates for different system categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies therefore need more than a general AI policy. They need to understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Which AI systems are being used.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What purpose each system serves.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Which data and external providers are involved.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Whether the company is acting as a provider, deployer or integrator.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What level of human oversight is required.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without that visibility, it becomes difficult to assess regulatory exposure or manage operational risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI compliance and cybersecurity now overlap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A system may meet its transparency obligations and still introduce serious security risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative AI applications <\/strong>can be exposed to vulnerabilities such as prompt injection, sensitive-information disclosure, unsafe output handling and excessive agency. <strong>OWASP identifies prompt injection<\/strong> as a leading risk because malicious or hidden instructions can alter an AI system\u2019s intended behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NIST similarly recommends integrating trustworthiness and risk management throughout the complete AI lifecycle, including design, development, evaluation, deployment and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, AI governance should involve more than legal and compliance teams. It should also include product, engineering, cybersecurity, data protection, operations and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What companies should do next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most practical starting point is to create a clear inventory of all <strong>AI systems <\/strong>used across the organisation, including approved tools, internal developments and applications adopted independently by employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, companies should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Classify each use case according to its purpose, users and potential risk.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review third-party providers, data flows and contractual responsibilities.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design transparency measures directly into interfaces and content processes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthen security controls, including access management, logging, testing and incident response.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Train employees according to their role and level of exposure to AI systems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is not to slow down innovation. It is to create the foundations that allow AI initiatives to move from isolated experiments to secure and scalable products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust will define the next stage of AI adoption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The AI Act <\/strong>signals a broader change in how companies should approach artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performance and automation will remain important, but they will no longer be enough.
